Vitamin B6 is a group of closely related chemically similar compounds that occur in nature. The group includes Pyridoxine, Pyridoxal, and Pyridoxamine, and these can be interconverted in biological systems. These are further transformed into yet another form of vitamin B6 inside the body called pyridoxal phosphate that acts as a coenzyme (coenzymes enhance the action of enzymes and thereby aid in catalyzing biochemical reactions.).
Vitamin B6 is essential for the functioning of the central nervous system, skin, and blood. Vitamin B6 is also imperative in the formation of Red Blood cells. The vitamin aids the functioning of over six enzymes and the smooth synthesis of nucleic acids and proteins. Pyridoxine is the most commonly used form of vitamin B6.

Mechanism of action of Vitamin B6
Vitamin B6 consists of three compounds-pyridoxal (PL), pyridoxine (PN), and pyridoxamine (PM), in combination with their phosphorylated derivatives, including pyridoxal 5'-phosphate (PLP), pyridoxine 5'-phosphate (PNP), and pyridoxamine 5'-phosphate (PMP). Vitamin B6, in its biologically active coenzyme form pyridoxal 5'-phosphate, undergoes a wide range of biochemical reactions, including the metabolism of amino acids and glycogen, the synthesis of nucleic acids, hemoglobin, sphingomyelin, and other sphingolipids, and the synthesis of the neurotransmitters serotonin, dopamine, norepinephrine and gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA).

Production of vitamin B6 by fermentation and culturing
This process involves the extraction of vitamin B6 by cultivating a microorganism related to the class of Rhizobium. In this process, a culture medium in used to produce vitamin B6 in aerobic conditions, and it is then further separated from the fermentation broth. This process results in high yields of vitamin B6.
Production by reacting with a catalyst
This process involves manufacturing Vitamin B6 without a solvent or a catalyst. The subsequent product is a mixture of appropriate Diels-Alder adduct (IV) in high proportion and appropriate 3-unsubstituted, 3,3-disubstituted 1,5-dihydro-8-methylpyrido[3,4-e] [1,3]dioxepin 9-ol (V) in low proportion. Further by acid hydrolysis, Pyridoxine is produced.
Production by isolation technique
An isolation technique utilizing a commercially available resin was devised as an alternative method for the synthesis of pyridoxine. An overall yield of 38-54 % and a purity of 76% are obtained through this process.
Vitamin B6 and Unisom
The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) has recommended a combination use of vitamin B6 and Unisom SleepTabs (doxylamine), for treating morning sickness in pregnant women. Recommended dosages are 10 to 25 mg of vitamin B6 three times a day, every 6 to 8 hours, and 25 mg of Unisom SleepTabs once before bed. Though this is the ideal dosage, specific dosages should be discussed with the physician before consumption.
