Yohimbine, an extract from a plant, historically has been used as an aphrodisiac. Although it has actions at many receptor sites (thus many side effects), numerous studies have demonstrated its effectiveness in antagonizing α2-agonist-induced sedation and analgesia in laboratory animals and dogs. Doses of 0.1 mg/kg generally have been employed to reverse xylazine sedation in small animals; high doses have caused excitement in dogs.
